RSS-as-Battleground for the IT Trades

The IT trades compete in many ways, and one of them is with RSS. How many feeds does each title provide? How are they segmented?

We've been studying this lately and here are some nuggets for you:

* eWeek/Ziff Davis Enterprise has 137 feeds, just nine more than Computerworld at 128. Network World has 71, InfoWorld only 21 and InformationWeek even less than that at 19. What a gap! We'll examine additional IT destinations in subsequent SWMS research.

It's tough to be an entrepreneur and editor-in-chief at the same time, but Bob Buderi does it. The former EIC of MIT Technology Review -- and author of three books -- is building a network of local tech destination web sites -- starting in New England with Xconomy.com. He's publishing articles and hosting face-to-face events, largely for the life science communities.

"How-To's" Dominate Most Popular Articles

Consumer tech coverage dominated while enterprise tech coverage was all but absent from January's "most e-mailed" and "most popular" articles in the WSJ, NYT, Forbes.com, USA Today and News.com, according to SWMS research.

Here's what else we turned up.

* Photo essays ranked as the first, second or third most popular content at News.com on 12 of the 15 weekdays we studied. Examples: Cracking Open the Xbox 360 Elite (Jan. 14, via TechRepublic) and LEDs in Your Contact Lenses? (Jan. 22). Photo essays typically are fun to view and generate more page views than articles.

eWeek Lays off Five Reporters

Paula Musich, Lisa Vaas, Peter Galli, Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols and Renee Boucher Ferguson were among those laid off this week at Ziff Davis Enterprise (ZDE), according to sources inside the company.

The departures came after ZDE quarterly revenues fell far below the levels expected by Insight Venture Partners, the company that bought ZDE in 2007.
